South African Youth Climate Change Coalition

We are a Movement of the Youth,by the Youth, For the Youth. That Aims to Address the Impacts of Climate Change while Raising Awareness and Educating the Youth of Africa & South Africa on the Part that They Can Play in Creating a More Sustainable Future. This organisation started in 2011 during the annual conference of the Youth, held in Durban. With the alignment of other youth climate coalitions in the world in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Kenya, Asia and many other countries. This movement is a registered organisation under the South African Non-Profit Organisations Act 71 of 1997. Registration number: 157-650 NPO

We have four core values that guide the objectives and purpose of the organisation. These are Awareness, Advocacy, Protection and Participation. All these values play a fundamental role in ensuring that the organisation stays true to its purpose of serving the interests of the environment and the young people of South Africa.

We believe that young people have a huge role to play in ensuring that we have an environmentally sustainable future. We therefore give the platform for young people to engage and express their views in platforms where they will be heard. We will create these platforms in our communities, schools and institutions of higher learning. Youth unity will not only save the world but will save every individual that becomes part of the change they want to see.

"You are no more the future of tomorrow, you are now the future of today and the future of tomorrow"-Kumi Naidoo (COY7)

We see Climate Change as an Opportunity rather than the problem it is often portrayed as.This Opportunity Lies in the Belief of Contributing towards a Cohesive Society while Building a Sustainable Future and Holding Our Current Progress to Account while taking Responsibility for our Current Progress. We are a Movement of the Youth,by the Youth, For the Youth. That Aims to Address the Impacts of Climate Change while Raising Awareness and Educating the Youth of Africa & South Africa on the Part that They Can Play in Creating a More Sustainable Future while Promoting Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies set Out by the United Nations Frameworks Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This organisation uses every young persons skills and ability to promote itself and its duties. We have leaders who have finance skills, Media skills, scientists, lawyers, political scientists, hydrologists, agriculturalists, international relations, leadership skills, organising skills, participating and advocacy skills, amongst many more. This gives our young people an opportunity to further their skills whilst working for the environment. We create various events across the year in which all these branches of young enthusiasts work together in order for them to pull them off.

We recognise that Government plays an important role in the rapid transition to safe climate, and we’re not afraid of running campaigns with a political element where it’s needed. We’re non-partisan, meaning that we don’t support one candidate or party over another – however we will judge them by their climate policies.

We also work with various non governemntal organisations such as 350africa.org, WLTP, Womin, GroundWork, Timberwatch, SDCEA etc

We have based our objectives on our core values. This is to ensure that everything we aim to do relates to what the organizations core values, hence the organization stays true to what it values the most.

  1. Awareness: The organization wants to ensure that young people are aware of the environment around them, so that they will be able to notice any changes to their environment which could affect their livelihoods.
  2. Advocacy: The organization shall advocate for environmental rights in every level it can be able to. This will mainly be through attending conferences, workshops and meetings. This will allow our young people to know what the current climate threats are and lobby propositions on behalf of young people.
  3. Protection: The organization shall pride itself in protecting the little natural resources that we have left to ensure our future generations also have access to these resources. We shall ensure that we oppose any new developments we feel are a threat to these resources and the lives our young people in South Africa
  4. Participation: The organization shall ensure that young people are actively involved in the review of policies and environmental statutes in South Africa. The organization shall encourage the involvements of young people in our communities when we they run programmes and environmental campaigns.
